…are not so weird or new. Back in the days before teh Interwebz, craft magazines had a back section of classified ads and one of the sections was Pen Pals. You looked through until you read an ad from someone who sounded interesting and then you sent a letter to the address they posted and hoped that they liked what you wrote enough to write you back.
People posting in magazines their...
Too, Too Long Between Updates...
So. With Reviving Romanticism as my inspiration, along with Steve Jobs and a few other people, I quit my job that I hated doing almost more than I hated the people in my department and their dysfunctional crazy-making. I am nearly finished with the semester that I’ve spent finishing my certificate in entrepreneurial welding. I have started a business but have yet to sell any product. I have...

I was told by my mother...
…that it would be difficult to stay in touch with my best friend when we moved to another state. She said that Becky would forget me. She didn’t want me to stay in touch because she and my dad were really fucked up and they wanted to start all over and pretend that everything would be okay.
So, I’ve never been good at staying in touch with people. I hate calling people because...

I started working with metal...
…last fall. I took an art metals class and took on a ginormous project that is still not quite done but only because I’m so picky about my vision for the finished project. I only mention it because I noticed tonight that after all the various art classes that I’ve taken (drawing, acrylic painting, photoshop, design studio, typography, and some others I can’t remember right...

I am not ashamed of how sensitive I am and how much I cry. Sometimes, I feel like I am also carrying the weight of those who are not enlightened enough to realize that emotional intelligence and the expression of emotions is just as important, if not more important, than ordinary intelligence. I…

Bats and owls and cats, oh, my!
We’ve got something of a new tradition going on — we take the cats out onto the porch when my husband gets home from work. We’re out here now in the dark — the one rule is that the cats must stay on (okay, near) the porch — it’s a covered cement area that extends 10’ from the house walls on 2 sides of the house. Plenty of bugs and such come onto the porch...
Finally, a little rain...
… but not enough to really wash the road dust off the car windows. Still, the cooler temperature makes sitting out on the porch more appealing. I can hear the quail calling and earlier I watched two Northern Flickers engaged in some kind of dance ritual. It looked like two females — perhaps they were deciding to work together instead of tearing each other down. However, I would swear, from the...

Chimney cleaning for the winter
Yesterday was chimney cleaning day as we convince ourselves that the warm weather will soon be leaving and cold weather will be arriving. Yes, I rubbed soot onto my face when I used the back of my glove to scratch near my nose. Dignity, always dignity.
We aren’t ready to bring over stacks of firewood yet. We kept a small pile in the house all summer — just in case. We have finally...

… I heard the coyotes singing. I love to hear them. I was just trying to fall asleep when I heard their voices erupt for just a few minutes and then fade away. They sounded like they were just up the hill but sound sometimes gets funneled up from the valley right to the back of the house.
I’m glad my city-raised cats are indoor cats that go outside for walks and to help us around the...
The day after the party...
… is exhausting.
This isn’t just any party. It is a party designed around watching the Perseid meteor shower. We live in the country and have very low light pollution and a perfect view of the eastern sky. We have a lot of friends who love nature or are theater people and love any kind of show or love astronomy but live in well-lit areas or who just love a party. So, we invite people...

Why don't you ever hear of evenitties?
The reason I’m thinking of oddities is because I remembered this weird rule about patterns. If you do something an even number of times, it looks wrong but if you do it an odd number of times, it looks right. So if I want to put marigolds in a painting, 3 is better than 2 or 4. If I want to insert still frames in a video, 5 is better than 4.
I think it also applies to music. I wonder if I...

the director was going through a divorce and had no sense of humor

My cat started to post this. He had dental work done yesterday. Clearly, he's still a little spaced-out from the drugs.

Priorities
I reorganized the order of blankets tonight. Bottom blanket is fuzzy, soft one. Moved quilt from top layer to middle layer and heavy crocheted from middle to top layer. Nick doesn’t like sleeping on the quilt. He prefers the crocheted.

But have you ever noticed how everyone does whatever they think is right?
99 times out of 100, the worst you can truly blame a person for is doing what they think is right. Even the worst sort of behavior is so often rooted in what they think is right.
That scares me, because my motto tends to…

These things may not matter to you and if they don’t matter to your partner, don’t worry about it. However, have the discussion before you move in together.
1. Peeled or unpeeled potatoes for mashed potatoes.
2. Direction of the toilet paper roll.
That is all for right now.

My Plants Seem to Think It Is Spring
The calendar says February and Punxsutawney Phil says 6 more weeks of winter but the bulbs are preparing to bloom and the potted plants on the deck are putting out new, tender growth.
I try to gently remind the bulbs that they were blooming the last time we had a March snow. They don’t care, they just point their buds to the sun and ignore me. The hummingbirds are already starting to fight...

Couldn’t get a pic of the skunk that ran away from the front porch late the other night, surprised by someone going outside. Suddenly, going outside didn’t seem that important.

Independence Day
This is the day we celebrate having broken away from our mother country, Great Britain. Was it such a good idea? I suspect so but wonder if any of the major issues in our history would have been different.
Obviously, GB would have needed to recognize us as a more independent colony, a colony that had earned a say in how we were taxed and governed. You don’t dump a bunch of criminals and...

Wildlife Rescue is Hard
So, the raccoon who showed up on Thanksgiving day with the serious injuries to his face and some possible brain or neurological damage was put down yesterday. He started having seizures and they continued and the vet decided that it was too serious. I had my doubts about the raccoon’s ability to recover from such severe injuries and hoped that the one good sign — eating — would...
